It’s filled with history, romance and good old-fashioned cutthroat competition and fun. Shuffleboard. Yes, shuffleboard.

I’m talking about the St. Petersburg Shuffleboard Club, situated in downtown St. Petersburg just north of Mirror Lake.

It’s gone in and out of vogue, from wintering snowbirds in the 1930’s playing by the hundreds, to hipsters and now the wider public rediscovering its uniqueness — even getting married there.

Construction on the courts and buildings begin in the mid 1920’s. It’s the oldest club of its kind in the world.

And every Friday night from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., they host a free event — the St. Pete Shuffle.

Tournament honors Bank of Hemet pioneeer

Good Pairings at Sierra Dawn South Tournament

A Shuffleboard event Honoring a former Bank of Hemet management director, an icon in the Valley’s financial system, John McDonaugh kicked off with an excellent number of entries, 64! It was held from June 15th to 17th, 20i5.

Jan Stephens, club president, was on hand every day to supervise this event. ATM’s were George Hayes and Carol Anderson. They were a most effective team in generating and upgrading the charts that were in place from beginning to end of the games. Head referee was George Hayner and Karla Winget collated and updated the scorecards.

Jim Lane and Bob Rule attended to the maintenance of the boards.

CSA rules applied in these Any Single games. Each game was scheduled for 12 frames.

All winners received a pin and cash reward for their solid effort.

Funding was on hand, thanks to The Bank of Hemet and the entry fees paid by all players. A nice variety of gifts was distributed in a drawing at the culmination of the event.

Nearly every tournament has a moment of drama; this, coming in the competition in the last game on Tuesday, June 16th. Two veritable “road warriors” hooked up in a challenge that went the entire 12 frames and wound up in a scoreless tie. Not content with that, Julian Brown and Kerry Selway worked their way into ANOTHER tie, 7-7 after their allotted two frames each. The eventual winner prevailed by virtue of a scoring lag shot. Must have been your day, eh, Kerry? –

Mountain View Villas

Marolyn and I, along with Rocky and Gigi Briggs, went up to Mountain View Villas, in Apple Valley yesterday. We were invited by Glenna Williams to try their reconditioned courts and give some instruction to the residents.
About 24 showed up to listen to Gigi explain how to play the game and try their hand at shuffling.
After a nice lunch we played a few frames for demonstration and then watched and coached the residents as they played.
Several seemed very enthused. Maybe we will have a new district in California. There are many towns nearby in the high desert.
I remembered to take my camera. Didn’t remember to take pictures.

Villa Del Monte Hosts Exciting Shuffleboard Action –

As 52 players took to the courts in the annual CSA Lee Christmas Memorial Tournament, the outcome of several contests was not determined until the last frame in many of the games. This was an Any Singles tournament.

Personnel was on hand to assure success in every aspect of the competition. Lynda Goggin, ATM, had command of the flow of the event plus the creation of and upgrading of the charts. Carol Anderson took on the assistant’s job, her first try at it. Head ref was George Hayner as Karla Winget ministered to the scorekeeping.

Frank Carchedi was ever-present as club president and supervisor of the games. I sought him out for a brief history of the Villa del Monte venue. We were much more fortunate on this date (June 1-3) than in 1980 when there was an incursion of water onto the shuffleboard courts, due to a breach in the San Jacinto River flood control levee. Now, control by the Bautista Flood Control Aqueduct has since alleviated the problem.

The boards were kept in top shape due to the efforts of Paul Epps, David Miller, Ann Cantu and Jerry White. The VDM kitchen crew went out of their way to provide “tantalizing sandwich selections” for 3 days. There were abundant ham- salad, chicken salad, egg salad plus hamburger/cheese-burgers and other amenities. (The pies were great!)

Contributions in cash and prizes were obtained from Polly’s Pies, Red Robin, Rachel’s Beauty Shop and the never-ending donation from The Bank of Hemet. We thank them all for that.

There they were, the top contenders gaining confidence with every shot, so, after receiving their pins and cash awards, the winners qualified to have their names printed in the Archives of the Lee Christmas Memorial Tournament. The Championship winner will have her name etched on the tournament plaque along with 2 former-year winners.

In the Championship bracket are these 4 winners:

First place, L-R,Bridgit Gerber (Sun City), second, Linda Smith (El Grande), third, Rita Deidrich (Sierra Dawn South) and fourth, Robert Brooks (Colonial Country Club).

And In the Consolation Division;

First place, R-LCarol Anderson (Hemet Muni)

second, Doty Bailey (Sierra Dawn South), third, Paul Epps (Hemet West), and in fourth place, Helen Noeltner (Sierra Dawn South East).

Watch for the upcoming John McDonaugh Memorial Tournament scheduled for June 15-18 at Sierra Dawn South, presided over by Jan Stephens. This is an Any Singles tournament.
