It’s filled with history, romance and good old-fashioned cutthroat competition and fun.  Shuffleboard. Yes, shuffleboard.

I’m talking about the St. Petersburg Shuffleboard Club, situated in downtown St. Petersburg just north of Mirror Lake.

It’s gone in and out of vogue, from wintering snowbirds in the 1930’s playing by the hundreds, to hipsters and now the wider public rediscovering its uniqueness — even getting married there.

Construction on the courts and buildings begin in the mid 1920’s. It’s the oldest club of its kind in the world.

And every Friday night from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., they host a free event — the St. Pete Shuffle.

Good Pairings at Sierra Dawn South Tournament

Marolyn and I, along with Rocky and Gigi Briggs, went up to Mountain View Villas, in Apple Valley yesterday. We were invited by Glenna Williams to try their reconditioned courts and give some instruction to the residents.
About 24 showed up to listen to Gigi explain how to play the game and try their hand at shuffling.
After a nice lunch we played a few frames for demonstration and then watched and coached the residents as they played.
Several seemed very enthused. Maybe we will have a new district in California. There are many towns nearby in the high desert.
I remembered to take my camera. Didn’t remember to take pictures.
