Well-Maintained Boards for Tournament Play –

August 14-16, 2017 – John McDonough Tournament for men and ladies hosted by SDSE.

It’s hard not to be impressed by the 40-foot long art deco murals embracing the courts on either side. Someone or several artists put in a huge amount of time and talent to create these pieces!

Good shuffleboard numbers, 64 entries made scheduling and pairing less difficult.

Several volunteers solicited businesses for gift certificates: Helen Noeltner, Betty Elias and Al Elias. We’re grateful to these contributors: Stater Brothers, Arturo’s Pizza, Marcos Pizza and Dickey’s Barbeque. Gifts were presented to the head referee and ATM’s.

Again, The Bank of Hemet bolstered the funding for this event – Many thanks to them.

Nine clubs were represented at this tournament.

Head ref was George Hayner as Dennis Iszler took charge of supervising the scoring.

Board crew was Scottie Lundie and Al Elias

An overwhelming number of winners came from SDSE. A familiar figure etched his resume into the

championship title, Robert Brooks.

The final results were –

Championship round: First place, L-R bottom row, Robert Brooks (SDSE), second, Lynda Goggin (SDSE), third, Harlan Mathews (El Grande)

and fourth, Roland Schneider (SDSE).

Consolation round:

First place, L-R top row, Ruth Schneider (SDSE), second, Larry Pierce (Foothills of Hemet), third, George Baslak

(Foothills of Hemet), and fourth, Bruce Kiefert (SDSE).

Always a pleasure to recognize these winners who received a pin and cash as their awards.

Thelma Carvin

Thelma Meda Finley Hall Carvin passed away at the age of 91 on July 29, 2017 peacefully at home with her daughter Cheryl and son Earle (“Woody”) at her side. She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on November 24, 1925. She was married to Joseph Hall in June 1943 until he was killed in action in December 1944. She later married Earle W. Carvin, Jr. on November 27, 1946 until his passing on November 30, 2003 after celebrating their 57th wedding anniversary. Thelma is preceded in death by her husband Earle Woodworth Carvin, Jr. She is survived by her son C. De Hall of Long Beach, son and daughter-in-law Earle W. Carvin, III and Kathy Carvin of Hemet, daughter Linda Joyce Hoback of 29 Palms, and daughter Cheryl Meda Burns of Hemet, 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Thelma grew up and attended high school in South Philly. Thelma and her husband Earle began raising their family in Levittown, PA until the birth of their 4th child when they moved to Long Beach, California. She worked nights at General Telephone as an operator in 1969. She began working for Dooley’s Hardware in Long Beach in 1970 retiring as the executive secretary in 1984. After retirement she was a volunteer at the 1984 Olympics for the archery and equestrian events. Thelma and Earle moved to Golden Village Palms RV Resort in Hemet, CA in 1988 to enjoy retirement. Thelma was incredibly involved with shuffleboard for many years playing on several teams and attending the classics in Mesa, AZ annually. She loved being a player, score keeper, and ATM. Her name appears on many trophies. Thelma lived her life to its fullest every day. She’d say “age is just a number” and she didn’t want to slow down. Kayaking at age 82, riding down big water-slides at age 86, cruising to Panama Canal at age 88, still shuffleboarding and driving at age 91, the list goes on. Following the private interment on Tuesday, August 22, 2017 at Riverside National Cemetery where she will join her husband Earle, there will be a Celebration of Life memorial service at 1:00pm at Golden Village Palms RV Resort located at 3600 W. Florida Avenue, Hemet, CA in the Banquet Room.

Hemet West Hosts Doubles Competition

Through efficient scheduling, the Hemet West Shuffleboard Club succeeded in concluding this event in three days rather than four. Their 10 available courts enhanced the scheduling process. There were 38 pairs of players involved in these games, which ran from July 24th to 26th, 2017

Personnel taking charge were ATM’s Helen Noeltner and Carol Anderson. Head ref again was George Hayner with Dennis Iszler supervising the collecting and collating of the score cards. A board crew of Paul Epps and Ken Norris kept the courts well maintained.

Club president Glenda Epps was constantly available to ensure a well-run event.

Nelda Lichtwald contacted a number of restaurants and brought in some fine gift certificates. Those contributing were: Subway Sandwiches, Chile’s Restaurant and the Sizzler Restaurant. A big Thank You to them. Lunches were made available for all the days.

All winners received a pin plus a cash award for their efforts. We are once again privileged to have received a generous contribution from The Bank of Hemet. Many thanks to them for their on-going support for the community!

For lack of a better way of describing the drama at the championship round; let’s keep it simple and call it “The Clash of The Titans” –

First place, Ruth and Roland Schneider (SDSE), second place, Scotty Lundie and Dot Nelson (SDSE)

third, Robert Brooks (SDSE) and Bruce Kiefert (GVP) and fourth, Harlan Mathews and John Hays (El Grande).

third, Lorraine Donahue and Jeanette Goldstein (El Grande) and fourth, Andy Hernandez and

Anna Sword (SDS).

We commend all volunteers and participants for their aspirations and efforts in

this smoothly run tournament.
