DESERT CHALLENGE DISTRICT 5 VS DISTRICT 7

A “Challenge” Must Have An Exclamation Mark!

For the Desert Challenge in shuffleboard, many players have to come together.

A full contingent of skilled players, (40 from both District 7 and District 50) met at Hemet West for this annual competition on January 23, 2016.

Sharyn DiChiro and Lynda Goggin were the coordinators for D 7, while Janice Fitzgerald fulfilled that duty from D 5.

Sharyn and Lynda assembled the charts for the event. Paul Epps maintained the boards (there were 10 of them) in a professional manner. A total of 40 games were played on these boards. * Hemet West is the only 10-board venue remaining in this District.

Officials from each District were ever-present: From D 5, President, Russel Smart, Vice President, Gene Eager and Secretary-Treasurer, Shirley Eager. CSA President and Hemet West club member, Jay Davidson was facilitator of these activities.

The MVP in my books has always been the person who orchestrated the acquisition of the marvelous cakes – Rocky Raver! District 7 made these cakes and coffee available between the two 16-frame games.

D 5 was allotted the yellow discs for game 1, and D 7 was given the yellow discs for game 2. D 5 (Palm Springs area) took the lead 11-9 in the first game, but D 7 abruptly stormed back in game #2 with 16 wins. The final score was D 7;25, D 5; 15.

Elected officials from Hemet West Shuffleboard Club were on hand continuously: President, Glenda Epps, Vice President, Nelda Lichtwald, Secretary, Jane Piccinonno,

Treasurer, Kathryn Fullerton and Past President, Paul Epps.

A warm Thank You to all participants, which included referees in place for all the games.

D 7 retains the handsome plaque for the coming year. This is the 13th year of this successful program.

The St Cloud Shuffleboard Club is finalizing the tournament package now, including an optional Saturday night event. Those on the tournament committee from St Cloud, including Tom Gionet (President), Jack and Carol Byron and Barb Fournier, continue to have new and exciting ideas that will make this a fabulous ISA event for everyone.

We Wait ‘Til Last to Put On The Best

From Dec. 28th to Dec. 31st, 2015, 74 players put their skills on the line in the CSA Hall of Fame Shuffleboard Tournament. Golden Village Palms Resort is the centerpiece of, and Hall of Fame museum setting for the California Shuffleboard Association. After the CSA elections Monday afternoon, three players were inducted posthumously as honorary members into the Hall of Fame. They, being; Jeanette Peoples, from District 7, Lou Oster and Madeline McDonald, from District 5.

The California State Shuffleboard Association election results were as follows: President, Jay Davidson, 1st Vice President, Carol Blasingame, 2nd Vice President, Nelda Lichtwald,3rd Vice President, Russel Smart. Secretary, Rocky Raver, Recording Secretary, Suzanne Sharpiro

and Treasurer, George Hayes. Attending her last meeting as 1st VP was Sharron Brown, who was thanked for her service on committees and for a job well done as Vice President.

Helen Bell was again multi-tasking as our venue facilitator, director, and creator of the charts for this event.

The Bank of Hemet stepped forward as sponsor of this program and generously contributed to the funding of awards and prizes.

Out-of-town guests/players included Dick Seburn, Linda Nielsen, John Nielsen, Val McDougal and Russel Smart, all from the Palm Springs/Coachella Valley area.

Among the many pleasant surprises were the following players: Marion Hemsing, entering her first tournament and Mike Garrett, a recent victim of a serious traffic accident, and a big winner in the Championship bracket.

Keeping the 12-frame singles games moving along in a timely manner were head ref, George Hayes, head scorekeeper. Karla Winget and board crew members: George Hayes, Kerry Selway and Ray Ackenhausen. We are always grateful for the support from those mentioned.

First place, Tootie Chittenden, second, Roland Schneider, third, Mike Garrett and fourth, Charles Morley.

Consolation round: back row L-R

First place, Kitt Lyman, second, Marion Hemsing, third, Irene Kaufman and fourth, Nadine Hackett.

CSA President Jay Davidson presented the money and pins to the winning players.

All winners received cash awards as the champion, Tootie Chittenden,was awarded a fine plaque to keep and a traveling trophy , both having her name inscribed thereon.

Many thanks to all players and helpers for their enthusiasm and efforts in putting on this successful tournament

Ian speaks in 2016: The only shuffleboard courts available to the public in Australia are six located on the roof of part of the ‘The Strand’ shopping centre at Coolangatta and ten located in an area of parkland at Elanora which the Association leases from the Gold Coast City Council. Both these sets of courts are operated by the Australian Shuffleboard Association (Qld) Inc and are available for use by members of the Association and visitors. Both these areas are located in the south eastern corner of the State of Queensland which has a very pleasant sub-tropical climate and is called the ‘Gold Coast’ unfortunately not after gold to be picked up on the street but after the over 20 or…
