20 ROOKIES COMPETE IN THE DISTRICT 5 ROOKIE TOURNAMENT

Approximately 70 spectators were viewing the keen competition on the first day of the 2025 District 5 Rookie Tournament at Ramon Park, Palm Springs, CA. Seven of the 9 California Shuffleboard Association District 5 clubs were represented. The second day of the tournament also saw standing-room-only for the spectators.

The “world famous” hamburgers were available on both days. The Ramon Shuffleboard Club hosted this annual tournament and was ably led by John Burnett, Tournament Chairman; Other volunteers were Head Referee, Fred Brown; Head Referee, David Reidford; Head Board Man, Dick Jenkins; Kitchen: Sharon Brown; 50/50 Raffle, Tracy Ferguson; and District 5 ATM, Shirley Eager. Thank you to all these volunteers and the District 5 shufflers who assisted in scorekeeping and refereeing.

In order to compete in this tournament, a rookie needs to meet the criteria established by District 5 – “…a player must not have been involved in extended shuffling, either in organized or recreational play, before January 1st of the preceding year of the Rookie Tournament. It will be up to the player and the integrity of the club president to make that determination. A player can only play in one Rookie Tournament.” There was no entry fee to participate in the tournament. Each of the 9 clubs donates $10 toward the expenses of the tournament.

The Champion, Chuck Maynard Jr., will have his name engraved on the traveling plaque awarded in memory of Gene Eager. Gene won the Rookie Tournament in 2008. Throughout the years of Gene serving on the District 5 executive board, he worked diligently to promote shuffleboard and he was always willing to help new shufflers learn to shuffle. The Rookie Tournament was Gene’s favorite District 5 tournament.
