Seventy-one shufflers competed to have their name engraved on the Gene Eager Memorial Plaque donated by the Eager Family. The tournament was hosted by the California Shuffleboard Association District 5 in Cathedral City. The Tramview Shuffleboard Club donated their shuffleboard facility for this fourth Memorial Tournament. The Eager family donated money to the prize fund.
Gene shuffled on the Indian Wells Hi-10 team, was elected their shuffleboard club president in 2009, an office he held until he passed away. After moving through the offices in District 5, he was elected to the office of District 5 President in March, 2016. His term of office expired in March, 2020, a few days after his death. Gene had been elected to the office of President of the California Shuffleboard Association 2 months prior to his death. He was You see from this involvement, how passionate about the game of shuffleboard. Gene lost his battle with pancreatic cancer in February, 2020.
In 2023, then District 5 President Gary Adams suggested that District 5 honor Gene by hosting this tournament. Thank you to all the volunteers who willingly stepped up to help at the tournament. District 5 President Blaine Clarke, Safari, was Head of the Boards; John McCready, TriPalms was Head Referee; and Head Scorekeeper was Matt Durkton, The Canyon, assisted by Noelle Stephens, Desert Crest. And Gene’s wife, Shirley, was the ATM preparing the charts.
