Twenty-eight rookies, representing 7 of the 9 shuffleboard clubs in District 5, competed under sunny skies at Ramon Park in Palm Springs on January 15 & 16. The weather was ideal and the shuffling was superb. The Ramon Shuffleboard club members did an outstanding job of introducing the rookie shufflers into tournament play.
Ramon notables organizing this annual tournament were: John Burnett, Ramon Park Rookie Tournament Manager; Fred Brown, Head Referee; Paul Yauch, Ramon Shuffleboard Club President & Head Scorekeeper; Dick Jenkins, Head of the 8 Boards used during the tournament; and Sharon Brown, in charge of the food which included the “world famous” Ramon Burgers. The aroma of onions was in the air early each morning which whet the appetite of the shufflers and the many spectators in attendance.
Each of the 4 shufflers placing in the Championship and Consolation divisions won trophies and the Champion, Mary Smolik, a member of the TriPalm Shuffleboard Club, was presented the traveling plaque that was donated by Shirley Eager in memory of Gene Eager. The TriPalm Shuffleboard Club was well represented in the placings.
